Different collectors will have different choices for the greatest baseball card set of the 1980s. However, there’s a good chance that 1983 Topps Baseball will be at or near the top of most of those lists. Featuring an iconic design and several key Rookie Cards, it’s one of the better Topps Baseball sets ever produced. The 1983 Topps Baseball checklist clocks in at 792 cards, a familiar number for many of the company’s flagship sets in the ’80s and ’90s. Most of that is dedicated to standard player cards, but some subsets are mixed in. The layout is one of several standout features in the set. For the first time since 1963 Topps, fronts have two photos. A large action shot takes up much of the front with a smaller inset portrait in a circle at the bottom. The tips of the Topps logo cleverly extend to make the outer frame. Despite all this, there’s still room for a bold nameplate at the bottom. Overall, it’s efficient, doesn’t feel cluttered and is still instantly recognizable today. Backs are a clean orange, working in full stats and other vitals. Space permitting, there’s room at the bottom for tidbits and personal highlights from the 1982 season. It’s not fancy, but it’s clean and gets the job done. Headlining the checklist is the trio of Hall of Fame Rookie Cards: Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs and Ryne Sandberg. Other RCs include Julio Franco, Frank Viola, Gary Gaetti, Dave Dravecky and Jim Eisenreich. Cal Ripken gets his first solo in-pack Topps card. He is in 1982 Topps as part of a three-person Rookie Card. There’s also his card in the 1982 Topps Traded box set. Top players get the All-Star treatment in the middle of the checklist. These have a tweaked design that use a star icon to replace the portrait. Team checklists have a top hitter and pitcher on the front. Separate manager cards take a more personal approach, looking at their respective careers. League Leaders breakdown different categories with the top players from both the AL and NL. The highlight of the subsets, though, are the Super Veterans. Taking a “then and now” approach, they picture experienced players as rookies alongside a current photo. It helps that many of the players here have gone on to the Hall of Fame, including Carl Yastrzemski, Johnny Bench, Gaylord Perry and Fergie Jenkins.
